I've been freelancing for about a decade and have traveled from China to Tibet to Siberia, South Africa, and South America in search of stories. I particularly like writing about birds and birding and how they provide an intimate window into the natural world.
I spent much of last year in south central Wyoming researching and writing a book about an extraordinary falconer and his pursuit of the toughest upland game bird in North America -- the sage grouse. Russell Galen of Scovil Chichak Galen Literary Agency, Inc. represents my book projects.
I'm a graduate of Kirkland College -- a women's college that was born in the 60s and died in the 70s when it was absorbed by Hamilton College -- with a degree in geology. After a stint in Scotland as a Thomas J. Watson Fellow, I pursued graduate work in American History at the University of Delaware.
I've worked for several non-profit organizations over the years including serving as director of a county historical society and administative director of Telluride Association (an educational foundation headquartered in Ithaca, New York).
My husband, Tim Gallagher, was one of the first to see the Ivory-billed Woodpecker in an Arkansas bayou in 2004. It was last seen in the 1940s and presumed extinct. His book about the experience -- The Grail Bird: The Rediscovery of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker-- was published in 2005. Tim's latest book is Falcon Fever: A Falconer in the 21st Century.
